Blog post by volunteer Steven Ferguson, age 16

Participating at Listen Lanarkshire I have received support to help me manage with how to present live radio, work the radio equipment and make good use of my time. Because of this I have gained more courage to speak live during the radio. I also have more time to figure out what needs to be done and received support making my own plans. This has helped me feel more trusted than I would feel at school.

During my time at Listen Lanarkshire I have gained better communication skills. In creating a podcast I learned to sound clearer. I am also now able to obtain much more precise details, for example finding information to record for the podcast. This has allowed me to make sure the podcasts and radio shows run smoothly as it allows me to better help plan what I am going to say and gain a better speaking voice with more confidence. I am also able to use apps designed for making podcasts more effectively.

Having participated in the project as a volunteer I then have arranged with the station and North Lanarkshire Council to gain a paid apprenticeship. I hope after this that sometime in the future I can continue to work in radio to become a full time radio show host and podcast producer and to continue gaining new skills.

Before participating at Listen Lanarkshire I was nervous with low confidence and felt like I did not fit in. Now I have more confidence, am less nervous and feels more positive about things in general.

My podcast is about reviews of video games and my personal thoughts on them. Along with this I help make sure the station is broadcasting music online when I am in and work with other volunteers when they are in at the same time too helping them broadcast their shows.
